A Wedding at The Museum of Nature
AMY & TYLER
Tyler and I met in 2007 when we were both attending Carleton University. Tyler is a drummer, and at the time, I was seeing the vocalist for his band. But the minute I met Tyler, I was smitten. One thing led to another, and we ended up dating for a few months — but then we broke it off! (Definitely not the stuff of fairy tale endings.) Eventually, Tyler moved away to Halifax to pursue his master’s degree. We kept in touch very casually during that time. We always planned to meet up whenever he was in town, but for one reason or another, our plans always fell through.
Fast forward six years, and we reconnected when he moved back to Ottawa after finishing his degree. We spent almost every weekend together watching Game of Thrones, and we discovered that the spark was still there, so we decided to try again.
We were in Japan for a friend’s wedding when Tyler proposed. He snuck the ring into the country in my carry-on luggage, and asked me to marry him while we were sitting on a bench outside of Nagoya Castle. I knew he was going to propose during the trip, but I wasn’t expecting it right at that moment, so I was a little stunned, to say the least. And of course, I said yes! We spent the rest of our vacation on cloud nine.
When planning our wedding, we wanted to make sure that it blended traditional elements with some aspects of our personality. We’re both enormous nerds, and while we weren’t super blatant with it during our wedding, we added a few touches here and there. Our tables were all named after locations in movies, TV shows, and video games we enjoy, and a lot of our music was taken from those same franchises. I don’t know if we could choose a favourite memory from the day. We were both so happy to have all our loved ones from across Canada and around the world with us to celebrate.
We chose Kristin from Union Eleven to be our photographer because we really liked her ability to move between candid and posed shots. We wanted to have the classic group and couple shots, but we also wanted to capture some spontaneous moments from the day. Kristin was wonderful to work with; she was very professional and patient as we tried to wrangle all our family members for group shots, and her creativity meant we ended up with some really unique photos! Thanks, Kristin, for being so great to work with and for making us feel as comfortable as possible in front of the camera!
